Country Music Highway

Known as The Country Music Highway, US 23 has earned its name.

A wealth of performers, both proven and as yet undiscovered, call the area home. The more famous include Billy Ray Cyrus in Greenup County; Naomi and Wynonna Judd in Boyd County; Ricky Skaggs in Lawrence County; Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn and Hylo Brown in Johnson County; Dwight Yoakam from Floyd County; Patty Loveless in Pike County and Gary Stewart in Letcher County.

Some of the area’s aspiring talent can be seen at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg on the first Tuesday of each month.

Where to hear it

The Kentucky Highlands Museum in Ashland holds exhibits on The Judds and Jean Thomas, and the Paramount Performing Arts Center — the Art Deco theater a few doors down Winchester Avenue — was the setting for the Billy Ray Cyrus “Achy Breaky Heart” video.
